Hey guys,
I have decided to challenge myself! My challenge is to do something techie in my classroom or for my teaching at least every other week... mybe that will change to every week if I can get the inspiration! I've started a blog to do just that. I need some ideas to get more tech into my elementary music classroom. I also plan on posting some more stuff about things that I've done in my classroom and what I'm doing to complete my techie challenge. My thoughts are that if I put it up here…

The K-3 teacher in my district just got a Promethean Board and cannot get the board to work with Groovy music. Is this a preference problem or does she need a driver? Thanks!

I recently was given a copy of Rhythm Heaven to do a review on and I was curious to know if anyone else had had a chance to take a look at it or not? It's basically a listen/repeat tapping game for the Nintendo DS that was apparently wildly popular in Japan and has now been reworked for western audiences. It's a lot of fun to play, but I am wondering if anyone else would ever even consider using such a game as a behavior reward for music or band classes? I don't see it being used to teach any co…

Hello,
I am enrolled in a Educational Technology masters program and have been working on creating instructional materials for music teachers who are new to GarageBand '09 or would simply like to learn more. I am happy to say that the class is over and those materials are now online. For those of you who saw my previous post and responded to my survey, thank you so much. I used information from that survey to guide my planning as I designed the lessons and developed materials. Each online lesso…

The purpose of this blog post is twofold: 1) To announce that I will soon have self-paced instructional materials available, free to share, to help music teachers learn how to use GarageBand, and 2) To ask for help with an online survey.
The survey is part of a Front-end Analysis for a course I'm taking in Instructional Design and the results will guide how I design the instructional materials. The purpose of this instruction is to introduce adult learners to GarageBand software and provide gui…

Music is the way of life. Music is the form of art that transcend all boundaries and prejudices related to class, culture and creed. All other languages need coordination of sensory faculties such as aural, oral, visual and gesture for expression, but music needs just an appreciative ear. Music has power to melt the most stonehearted person.
Music School LA is the pioneering music arts school and the premier college of music based in Los Angeles. The school was founded in the late 70s with the…

I wanted to accomplish several things through this project:
1) Demonstrate how music elicits an affective response in an audience, and what musical characteristics work to create the response. Focus on timbre, but other musical elements , as well (rhythm, melody, harmony, texture)
2) Exploration of visual art resources to identify other art forms that can elicit similar affective responses i…

hi techies,
I am looking for some new ideas on using garage band with my 4th and 5th grade classes. So far we do a composition project in each grade. 4th grade focuses on using lyrics that tie in with their simple machines science unit. You can check out their comps on our glen grove school web site under teams-fine arts-music. 5th grade does a Halloween scary composition and has more creative choices for lyrics, styles, etc. But I would love to hear what other general music teachers are doing…

Music Education is traditionally thought of in terms of General Music, Band and Chorus. But, except in a few schools, the vast majority of students are not enrolled in Band and Chorus.
So, how should we teach music to everyone else? Should reading music be a priority? Notating music? Are these, perhaps, roadblocks to music creation, involvement and enjoyment?
The REALITY is that, even among people who earn a living as musicians, only a full 10% can actually read music. A popular example is Pau…
