Using web tools to learn recorder in the Junior Classroom

Hi,

As part of Microsoft Canada's Innovative Teacher contest I've put together a resource for helping students learn to play recorder:

www.PortableRecorder.ca

It is inspired by the "Recorder Karate" approach where students earn a belt to tie on to their recorder once they demonstrate meeting the requirements. Because I either created or arranged all video, audio and animation that goes with each of the leveled 21 songs, you can use the songs without worrying about copyright.

In order to earn a particular "recorder belt" a student needs to 1) identify the note names, 2) perform a four bar rhythm and 3) perform an 8 - 16 bar song. Videos, audio files and animation are available on the site to assist the students, and teachers, when they practice.

I'm fortunate to teach in a location where the vast majority of students have internet access at home. Obviously, that is not always the case. My hope is to obtain more video/mp3 players like the Zune and iPod to add these files to. I would then sign out these players for home use.

This is still in its infancy, but I think there's a lot of potential.

See what you think!

This looks terrific! I used Recorder Karate last year in my class, but love the idea of incorporating technology/internet/etc. with the curriculum. Great job!
